4:30 - 6:45  - Trainings: "Quiet Cruelty: It’s a Girl’s World" by Michele Lemell (Asheville City Schools) and Crystal Johnson (Girl Scouts) and “The Pecking Order: Bullying and the Power Continuum” traveling exhibit by Julia Shuster (Center for Diversity Education)


7:00-8:30 – Screening of “Let’s Get Real”

Option to earn .3 CEU Credits

This is an interactive workshop on adolescent aggression and best practices for encouraging students to move from the role of bystander to advocate. This workshop is designed for anyone who works with young people.

This is a free event.

Name-calling and bullying are at epidemic proportions among youth across the country, and are often the root causes of violence in schools. Let’s Get Real gives young people the chance to tell their stories in their own words–and the results are heartbreaking, shocking, inspiring and poignant.

Anna Sharratt of Our VOICE, BuncombeCounty’s rape crisis center, will lead an interactive workshop designed to take a critical look at gender stereotypes, the effects they have on adolescents and best practices for working with teens on the subject.

With a fearless look at a highly charged subject, Straightlaced unearths how popular pressures around gender and sexuality are confining American teens. Their stories reflect a diversity of experiences, demonstrating how gender role expectations and homophobia are interwoven, and illustrating the different ways that these expectations connect with culture, race and class.



Dessert Reception will follow the screening at the Blue Spiral Art Gallery - next door to the Theatre.

Training: Let's Get Real by GroundSpark staff

Trainers from Groundspark, the San Francisco-based filmmakers who made both Let’s Get Real and Straightlaced, will facilitate training for teachers, social workers and other youth workers on how to address and prevent bullying in school- and out-of-school settings.

April 28 – 30, 2010  - A spring symposium with trainings and community events led by Groundspark and their anti-bullying initiative “Let’s Get Real” will be hosted at UNC Asheville. Educators, youth workers, and judicial system workers will be given research-based resources and best practices in empowering youth to move from bystander or silent witness to advocate and ally against youth harassment.
