Sarah Gudger's Journey to Freedom

As part of a course at UNC Asheville taught by Dr. Ellen Pearson, students Catherine Amos and Katherine Calhoun created "Sarah Gudger's Journey to Freedom," an interactive Story Map honoring the memory of Sarah Gudger, an ex-slave from the Swannanoa Valley in Western North Carolina. This site incorporates the timeline, images, and documents about Ms. Gudger's life taken from an interview with the project of the Library of Congress' Federal Slave Narratives.

As the only written, personal eye witness account of a person who was enslaved in Buncombe County, the narrative provides a unique window into the time period.
