My Heroic Present

My Heroic PresentWe are excited to announce that we will be hosting the exhibit "The Heroic Present: The Gypsy Photographs of Jan Yoors" from March 1 - 31, 2012 at UNC Asheville. The Belgian-born Yoors, a photographer, painter, sculptor, and weaver, lived with the Roma and documented their lives with his camera from the 1930's to the 1970's. During WWII, Yoors joined the Allied Forces to fight the Nazis, who had made the European Roma an object of persecution.  This exhibit brings together 65 of his photographs of the Roma. The photographs are accompanied by explanatory texts and film. To learn more about the exhibit, visit the Museum of History & Holocaust Education.
